Museum of Music Automatons in Seewen, Canton Solothurn

The Museum of Music Automatons is owned by the Swiss Confederation and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in northwestern Switzerland and the region of Schwarzbubenland. It offers a varied annual programme and interesting cultural events. The modern museum building is in keeping with its geographical surroundings and its colour and materials reflect the rough yellow Jurassic limestone.

The Museum of Music Automatons in Seewen, Canton Solothurn, houses one of the world’s largest and most famous collections of Swiss music boxes, disc music boxes, musical clocks, watches and jewellery, as well as other music automatons from the 18th century to the present day.

In the Museum for Music Automatons in Seewen there is no doubt that the long-lost organ of the Britannic, the sister ship of the Titanic, which sank in 1912, has been found. The instrument, documented in drawings and a photograph, had disappeared for nearly a century. The organ was discovered during the restoration of the Welte Philharmonic Organ of the Museum for Music Automatons and is ready to be admired in new splendour.

Under the heading “Switzerland – the land of sound pioneers”, the Museum for Music Automatons in Seewen offers a tour of the permanent exhibit, which focuses on Swiss music boxes, among other things. A visit of this exhibit is included in the admission price. It leads through various rooms where the guests are spellbound, not only by the sounds of the music automatons.
