The Onsernone valley is known above all for its unspoilt romantic landscape. The bottom of the valley is practically impassable due to the wild river Isorno passing through it, and the small villages along its banks are surrounded by dense green forests.
From Locarno, the postbus will take you on a comfortable ride into the Onsernone valley, driving through Intragna, the main village of the Centovalli. Here you can stop to admire the 70-metre-high railway viaduct and the highest bell tower in Ticino (bus stop "Intragna, Ponte"). The journey then continues into the unspoilt Onsernone valley. Its villages are distributed over many sunny terraces and feature typical stone houses as well as the odd mansion, once built by emigrants who had made their fortune elsewhere. Despite the altitude, the mild climate of the valley is ideal for palm trees, vines and chestnut trees. Because of its tranquility and idyllic sceneries, many artists and intellectuals such as Max Frisch, Kurt Tucholsky and Golo Mann found inspiration in this valley.
In Loco (bus stop "Loco, Paese") the Onsernone museum illustrates the culture and history of the valley and also runs an old mill. After a restoration in the nineties, it is now back in operation and is used to produce the typical Bòna flour. At Russo, the valley forks and the postbus continues towards Spruga (bus stop "Spruga"), the last village of the valley which borders on Italy. It is the starting point for numerous hikes, and the remains of the former thermal baths, the "Bagni di Craveggia", are found here too. In Russo there is another PostBus route in the direction of Vergeletto, where at the terminus (bus stop "Vergeletto, Funivia Salei") you can take a cable car up to Alpe Salei at 1777 m. Vergeletto is also ideal for easy walks because of its level topography.
